Calient Optical Layer 1 Switches
The S-Series Optical Layer 1 Switch, manufactured by CALIENT Technologies, is an all-optical switch that establishes, monitors, and changes connections between single-mode optical fibers. This is achieved using Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) optical switching to create connections between fibers, regardless of the data rate or protocol of the signals they carry. Consequently, any input fiber can be connected to any output fiber. The S-Series is protocol agnostic and transparent to data speed. Notably, the S320 model offers the lowest price per port of any switching technology.
The S-Series is available in a 320-port (S320) version. Each port represents a TX/RX fiber pair. Specifically, the S320 features low insertion loss (3 dB max) and ultra-low latency (30 ns worst case). Additionally, it has a typical power dissipation of 45 W. The S-Series is available in 100-to-240 VAC and -48 VDC powered versions. Moreover, it includes dual (A and B) power feeds for maximum redundancy. The S-Series has dimensions of 17.5”w x 12.2”h x 19”d (445 x 310 x 483 mm) and weighs 45 lbs. (20.5kg). Its shipping weight is 95 lbs. (43.2kg).
Furthermore, the S-Series has a variety of management features. Users manage and communicate with S-Series Layer 1 switches via redundant, high-reliability Control Processors. The S-Series supports TL1 command sets, SNMPv3, a CORBA interface, and a Web-based Graphical User Interface. In addition, REST, OpenFlow, and other APIs are available. The S-series also has dual Gigabit Ethernet Ports, a Serial Console Port, and External Alarm Contacts for physical interfaces.
CALIENT’s field-proven MEMS technology is deployed in more than 750,000 optical connections worldwide. As a result, the S-Series delivers high reliability, small form factor, low power consumption, low cost, and ease of use. The S-Series provides scalable and protocol-independent automated optical switching and management infrastructure for a wide range of data center, service provider, and government applications. Key applications include DevOps/Test Automation, Wireless Networks, Cloud, Enterprise & Colocation Data Centers, Disaster Recovery, Subsea Cable Networks, Fiber to the Premise (FTTP) Networks, and Cybersecurity.
